Project Controls - Formal Value Engineering
Value Engineering should improve building integrity while reducing costs on a short-term and/or long-term basis. Boyken’s value-engineering specialists contribute to the overall management objectives of streamlining operations, improving quality, reducing costs, increasing energy efficiency and improving the environment.

Our process focuses on achieving the same or better performance at a lower cost without reducing the slightest degree of quality or reliability. If essential levels of quality and reliability are not maintained, there is poor value regardless of cost. Using value-analysis techniques, Boyken identifies and removes unnecessary expense.

Short-Term – At any time during the design process, the owner may find it necessary to reduce the cost of the project. Boyken’s value-engineering services include a complete review of building systems, selected materials or construction procedures to reduce construction costs without altering the overall quality or integrity of the project. We strongly believe that value engineering is not a cost-cutting exercise, but an analysis of functions for each building system to achieve greater value for the owner.

Long-Term – Our value engineering extends to building operations as we calculate lifecycle costs and make recommendations based on long-term return, rather than solely on initial construction expense. Value engineering is more than a cost-cutting exercise. Its benefits extend to:
  • Separation of needs from wants
  • Risk identification
  • Performance, efficiency improvements
  • Consideration of alternative designs and other solutions
  • Identification of alternative construction methods
  • Staff empowerment through teamwork across disciplines
  • Improves staff morale, commitment and relationships
  • Enhanced service/product quality
  • Project rationalization
