University of Georgia Animal Health Research Center, Athens, Georgia
Boyken International was engaged by the University of Georgia to assess the current status of the project and develop a plan to complete the Animal Health Research Center (AHRC) project. The facility was designed as a conversion of an existing building located on the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The AHRC is a three-story concrete and masonry structure with a gross area of 73,000 SF. Prior to Boyken’s involvement, construction was halted in 1998. Boyken International was retained as part of the project team to develop and implement a corrective plan. The project corrective plan included the following scope of work:
  • Reconstruction of existing facilities to meet all current applicable codes, and correction of defective elements previously installed.
  • Upgrading the existing building’s layouts, systems and functions to be at the cutting edge of technology consistent with a world-class BSL-3Ag facility.
  • Re-construction and fit-out of the second floor laboratory spaces.
A design/build procurement method was utilized, comprising of a two-step process following a request for qualifications and a request for proposals sent to the pre-qualified firms. Boyken International provided comprehensive program management services including project management, on-site owner’s representation, cost management, schedule management, quality management and commissioning facilitation. The building is now fully functional and operational.
