University of Alabama Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building and Vivarium, Birmingham, AL
The University of Alabama at Birmingham retained Boyken International to provide owners’ representative services, cost management and schedule management services for construction of its Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB). Located on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the facility is 12 stories high and has a total of 314,000 gross SF, including 13,200 gross SF of renovation area under an existing adjacent parking deck. The building exterior incorporates neoclassical design features including an entranceway rotunda. It houses administration and lab support space on the first floor, with 11 floors of research laboratories with office and support space. The major mechanical HVAC systems are located atop the building, housed in a penthouse.

The IBRB project is supported by construction of a 100,000 gross SF, five-story research-support facility, which contains facilities for primates and small animals. The two are joined via a 300-foot long air-conditioned connector structure. The project was completed within the original budget and opened on-schedule.
