M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Basic Sciences Research Building
The George & Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is a 16-story, full interstitial building, with even numbered floors serving as interstitial space for the odd numbered floors below. The interstitial floors are designed as "walk-on ceilings" providing continual access to the MEP systems for regular maintenance and renovation, without disrupting the main lab floors. A two-level penthouse contains exhaust fans for the building. The building contains research laboratories, an animal vivarium, conference facilities, and the Graduate School of Biological Sciences; all totaling approximately 500,000 SF.

Boyken’s services consisted of providing on-site staff to assist assigned M. D. Anderson personnel in the administration of the construction contract. These services included the monitoring and coordination of the design and construction teams from the construction manager to the architect on a daily basis as an extension of the MDACC Capital Planning and Management Group. Boyken also provided move-in management services to assist in the transition of staff to their new locations. This led to better communication between the owner and design teams which shortened the normal development process, leading to both cost savings and better schedule compliance.
